Here’s a little mom truth: I am horrible about taking care of myself. Horrible. I don’t wear makeup daily, I don’t moisturize as often as I should, I don’t take vitamins daily, heck, I shower every other or third day. Yeah, I know. I’m gross. But seriously, who has time with 2 little kids running around the house like I do, demanding my attention every second of every day? !

So because I don’t take awesome care of myself, I haven’t gotten my hair cut in a really, really, REALLY long time. I want to say it was right after Madison was born, but really, who remembers those details? So because I haven’t cut my hair since the dinosaurs roamed the Earth, I have really long hair, which requires maintenance (or good elastic bands to just throw it up in a mom-bun).  My hair is a mess. I don’t have time to fix it up or blow dry it, and God forbid I fall asleep with wet hair because I’ll wake up in the morning looking like I stuck my finger in a socket. It’ll just be a frizzy mess. This is me on a daily basis.

I have hair strands everywhere, my bra strap is by my elbow instead of where it’s supposed to be – I mean, I look like I’ve had a day in this picture, right? Yeah, that’s me; hot mess mom 1000%.

Needless to say, I’m a minimalist when it comes to self-care. I need something that will pack a punch without having to dedicate a whole lot of time to it. And, to top it off, I also like to keep things as natural as possible without making myself look like an oily mess.

Thanks to Moms Meet, I was sent a sample of Desert Essence Anti-//Breakage Shampoo and Conditioner as well as their Hair Mask to review. I’ve been using it now for about 3 weeks, and I am seriously surprised! First, let me say, this stuff smells ah-mazing. It contains Jojoba and coconut oils plus aloe and saw palmetto to smooth the hair cuticles plus to fortify and revitalize strands and minimize breakage. It also contains botanical oils and radish seed extract for shine. Below is my hair right now. I just washed and conditioned it. It’s shiny, it’s flowy, it’s soft, it actually looks pretty awesome for just washing and running a brush through it!

Social Responsibility

After researching this company a bit more, I found out that they’ve actually been around for a long time and are pretty darn amazing. They have been around since 1978 and their philosophy on hair care is that their products contain all the nutrients and ingredients you need and none that you don’t. They were the first company to bring Jojoba Oil to the US market. Think about that for a second. Jojoba oil is in a lot of the beauty products you use, and they were the /first/ to introduce it to the US market.

Besides being pioneers, they also use all natural products and maintain strict standards. They believe in being socially responsible with the products they make and making sure that it doesn’t impact our globe in a negative way, their consumers or that the resources they use are clean. They don’t believe in animal testing, the palm oil and palm kernel oil that is used in their soaps is sustainably sourced from farmers you follow RSPO certification standards, they are a certified B-Corp Corporation, and they also partner with organizations like Plan International USA’S Because I An a Girl Initiative where each purchase of their new oil blends, restorative and balancing facials, 1% of their sales will be donated to help girls in impoverished areas get access to education.

Isn’t that an amazing company?

How to Use

You basically use the shampoo and conditioner how you would any other brand. The conditioner though, I must warn you, when you put it in, it doesn’t feel like it’s doing anything.  Wait for it. Spread it on your hair and give it a minute or two to work its magic. Give it a quick rinse, but don’t rinse it all away, and start finger combing your hair to get any tangles out. After your done, rinse it all out and you’re done!

Top use the weekly mask, you apply it to your wet hair after using the shampoo.  Spread it from root to tip, unless you have fine or oily hair, then don’t put it on the roots.  Leave it on for 20-30 minutes and rinse. To really work it in, put on a shower cap and wrap your head in a hot towel and wait for it to work its magic.
